Scientific studies are the primary currency of evidence in research, but they are not always easy to read — particularly for those without formal scientific training. Understanding the basic structure of a published study, and knowing what questions to ask about its methodology and conclusions, is a valuable skill for anyone who wants to engage seriously with research findings.
The Structure of a Scientific Paper
Most scientific papers follow a standard structure: abstract, introduction, methods, results, and discussion (sometimes followed by a conclusion). Each section serves a distinct purpose. The abstract provides a brief summary of the study's aims, methods, and findings. The introduction situates the study within the existing literature and explains why the research question matters. The methods section describes how the study was conducted in enough detail that other researchers could, in principle, replicate it.
The results section presents the data collected during the study, typically with statistical analysis. The discussion interprets those results, considers their implications, and acknowledges limitations. Reading a paper critically means engaging with all of these sections, not just the abstract or the conclusions.
Key Questions to Ask
When evaluating a scientific study, several questions are particularly important. What was the study design? Randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and case reports provide very different levels of evidence. What was the sample size? Small studies are more susceptible to chance findings. Was the study pre-registered? Pre-registration reduces the risk of selective reporting of results.
Who funded the study? Funding sources can create conflicts of interest that influence study design, analysis, and reporting. Has the study been replicated? A single study, however well-designed, is rarely sufficient to establish a scientific conclusion. Replication by independent research groups is an important part of the scientific process.
Limitations and Uncertainty
Every scientific study has limitations, and reputable researchers acknowledge them explicitly. A study that does not discuss its limitations should be viewed with skepticism. Understanding the limitations of a study is not a reason to dismiss its findings, but it is essential context for interpreting what those findings mean and how much weight they should carry.
